DESCENT

DESCENT
(2001-2006)

Six pulsed light works exploring loss and release.
The metaphor of descent, often portrayed as going underground, draws parallels with timeless tales of the human journey of transformation. Looking into the depths to which emotions may fall can forge a new understanding of life's totality.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Light changes. It measure time and space. As an artistic medium it is transient; altering mood, content and intent.

In working with light, my installations explore the experience of transformation. Light is my means, holography and photography my media. Attempting to capture an experience of transience, hold it a moment and pass it along is a way of telling the tale. The same stories have been told through time, but every generation has the opportunity to retell them anew with the technologies of their age.

Light is my metaphor and means of touching something inherently eternal and momentary.

HOLOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE

The holographic technique used to make these images is called "holographic interferometry". Often employed for scientific testing and measurement, this technique reveals minute motions and vibrations which are normally not perceptible to the eye. Two holograms are exposed on the same film a millionth of a second apart. The minute differences between the two holograms reveals themselves as the characteristic bands of light and dark that you see in these images.
